Abstract        :

Landau-Silin theory characterizes the phenomenology of Fermi liquids in terms of a few so-called Landau parameters. It describes thermodynamics, collective modes and kinetics in a uniform framework. We will show that it is possible to generalize Landau-Silin theory in certain limits in the generic class of models of non-Fermi liquids that have emerged from the holographic correspondence. All aspects of the phenomenology are characterized by analogues of Landau parameters and could be separated into three broad classes. Even when the quasi-particle excitations are sharp, the collective modes - particularly the zero sound can behave differently from a Fermi liquid. The kinetics will be captured by a generalization of Boltzman-Vlasov equation. A sharp universal signature will be a non-equilibrium generalization of the fluctuation-dissipation relation which can be tested using current experimental methods.
