Maximum number of Intake in 2020 - 15

Dates for interviews of shortlisted candidates are November 9-13, 2020.

Here we publish three shortlists of candidates who are eligible to appear in the interviews.
The three lists are in three streams – Theoretical Physics, Experimental Physics and Biophysical Sciences including Chemistry. The criteria used for making the shortlists are as follows:

Experimental physics: Ranks up to 150 in JEST or NET or ranks up to 100 in GATE along with 65% and above marks in HS.

Theoretical physics: Ranks up to 150 in JEST or NET or ranks up to 50 in GATE along with 85% and above marks in HS.

Biophysical Sciences including chemistry: Ranks up to 100 in NET or up to 100 in GATE. JGEEBILS scores have also been considered.

  • Students are invited to join the Ph D programmes of the Institute in Physics and Biophysical Sciences starting from August 2020.
  • The curriculum starts with a pre-Ph D course work, popularly known as Post M.Sc. programme.
  •  For Physics stream, the Post M.Sc. programme is divided into two branches : Theoretical Physics and Experimental Physics.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic the selection process for the PhD Admission of 2020 has been delayed. Those who have already applied through our portal need not apply again; all those applications are with us.

Others who are interested may apply from September 7,2020. The last date of application is September 30, 2020.

For all future notifications and updates please check this website.

  • Eligibility

Physics: M.Sc. in Physics.

Biophysical Sciences: M.Sc. in Physics / Chemistry (with Life Science at 10+2 level) or M.Sc. in Life Sciences (with Chemistry and Mathematics at 10+2 level).

Students appearing in the final examinations for their M.Sc. degrees during the current academic session may also apply. However, their selection will be on provisional basis and admission will be subject to successfully passing the final examination in compliance with the cut-off requirement for SINP.

The cut off for Post M.Sc. screening are 60% for M.Sc and 55% for B.Sc.

  • Application procedure

The eligible students can apply for the programmes only through online application (available from early March 2020)

Further Details will be announced in this web page.

  • Selection procedure

A first screening will be made based on previous academic records of the applicants.

A further shortlisting of candidates will be made based on the performance in nation-wide screening test as mentioned below:

For Physics :

i) Joint Entrance Screening Test (JEST)

ii) GATE in Physics

iii) CSIR/UGC NET for JRF in Physics

For Biophysical Sciences:

i) Joint Graduate Entrance Examination for Biology and Interdisciplinary Life Sciences (JGEEBILS) conducted by NCBS-TIFR

ii) CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICMR NET for JRF

iii) GATE in Life Sciences, Biotechnology, Physics and Chemistry

The short-listed candidates will be called for interview to be held at SINP (during May-June 2020).
The information about the interview will be sent by e-mail and also announced in our web page.
The final selection of candidates will be done on the basis of their performances in all the above stages of screening and interview.
The selected candidates will be informed by e-mail and also through announcement in our web page.

  • Important Information

Please note that candidates seeking admission to SINP Ph.D. programmes need to apply through online application portal with hall ticket number/rank/percentile marks of national level qualification tests like JEST, JGEEBILS, NET, GATE.

  • Fellowships and benefits

The selected students are admitted to Post M.Sc. as Junior Research Fellow (JRF). Depending on the selection procedure and eligibility in nation-wide screening tests, there are two kinds of fellowships the students can enjoy:

i) SINP fellowships for candidates who are selected through JEST, JGEEBILLS, GATE:

₹31,000/- p.m. for 1st two years

₹35,000/- p.m. for subsequent years

Tenure: Fellowships are awarded for a maximum of 5 years. These fellowships are renewed yearly, subject to satisfactory performance.

Contingency, HRA etc. as per rule.

ii) Extramural fellowships awarded by external funding authorities of Govt of India (UGC, CSIR, DBT and ICMR) for candidates who are selected through NET.

For extramural fellowships, the amount of fellowship, contingency grant, HRA and other benefits will be as per CSIR/UGC/DBT/ICMR rules (SINP will take no financial responsibility for students selected in this scheme).

For all candidates, limited hostel accommodation will also be available.
