Location of the campus and general information

The campus of the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics (SINP) is in an area of Calcutta (or Kolkata) called Salt Lake (also known as Bidhan-Nagar).

Salt Lake is a satellite township located in the Northeast part of the city of Calcutta (or Kolkata). There are several entry points to Salt Lake City from the Eastern Metropolitan Bypass (which runs roughly north to south along the eastern fringe of Calcutta). The northern-most entry point to Salt Lake (or Bidhannagar) from E.M. Bypass is through ULTADANGA.

A place in Salt Lake is often recognised by its nearby "Water Tank Number" and/or "Island". Here "Island" means the round-shaped traffic islands at various cross-roads. The entire area is subdivided into different blocks. Entering Bidhannagar from Ultadanga, the main thoroughfare is the 1st Avenue of Salt Lake. Your first "Island" will be "PNB Island" (Punjab National Bank Island). As you go along the 1st Avenue from Ultadanga entry, the Salt Lake "Blocks" on your left are arranged as AA, AB, AC, ..... (on your immediate right the "Blocks" will be BA, BB, BC, ......).

SINP campus is located around 3 K.M. from Ultadanga down the 1st Avenue in Block AF. Below, we describe how to reach SINP from Ulta-Danga, as well as from railway stations, the airport, and important spots in other parts of the city.

Maps

Two maps are linked to this page to help you.

Map 1 Map 2
Comment You can click the name of any block to obtain a detailed map of the block. It is possible to change between different formats, like simple map or satellite picture, or a mixture of the two.
Instructions
  • Baishakhi: Confluence of the blocks AF, AF, BF, BG.
  • Ultadanga: Not shown in the map. But the road from Ultadanga enters this map through 1st Avenue, which is marked in the map.
  • If you click on AF block, you will obtain a more detailed picture of the block, with the institute clearly marked. Somewhat out of date so far as the names of various sites are concerned. For example, the area marked as "Northern InterUniversity" is really the campus for the "Variable Energy Cyclotron Centre". But Saha Institute is marked correctly.
  • You may also take a look at the satellite map whose link appears on the page and zoom it until you see a big L-shaped building in the map, located a little to the north of "Calcutta Police Quarters".
The map opens with an L-shaped building at roughly the center. This is SINP. You can zoom out to relate its location to other places in the city.
