Prof. Milan Kumar Sanyal: Fellow of The World Academy of Science (TWAS)

The World Academy of Science (TWAS) has elected Prof. Milan Kumar Sanyal of Surface Physics and Material Science division, former Director of Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, as a Fellow of the Academy. TWAS is a global science academy based in Trieste, Italy, working to advance science and engineering for sustainable prosperity in the developing world. TWAS, earlier known as the Third World Academy of Sciences, was founded in 1983 by a distinguished group of scientists from the developing world under the leadership of Abdus Salam and was inaugurated officially in 1985 during a ceremony attended by UN Secretary-General Javier Pérez de Cuéllar. Today, TWAS has some 1,100 elected Fellows from 90 countries; 15 of them are Nobel laureates. This year TWAS awarded forty-four new Fellows to bring the total TWAS membership to 1178.

TWAS has awarded Prof. Milan K. Sanyal the Fellowship in Physics, and the citation reads as Prof. Sanyal has made significant contributions in understanding of growth-mechanism and structure-property relationship of the nanomaterials that produce novel properties due to confinement-induced ordering. Particularly, he has done pioneering work in synchrotron x-ray scattering techniques. Member of the three Indian science academies, he has received the CNR Rao Prize Lecture in Advanced Materials, the DAE-Raja Ramanna Lecture in Physics and the JC Bose Fellowship of DST, India, among others.” Prof. Sanyal will be inducted at the Academy's 27th General Meeting in 2016.
