Research in Biophysics was initiated in India in 1950s and the first Biophysics Division was opened at the Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics by Prof. N.N. Dasgupta. It was centered around the first electron microscope fabricated indigenously in the Institute, much before United States or Japan built their own version. The Indian Biophysical Society (IBS) was also founded in Kolkata in 1961. The interdisciplinary nature of of biophysical research has attracted many scientists from different disciplines ranging from physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics and computer science to make original contributions to the subject. To enable active scientists to present their current research before the community and to facilitate exchange of views an annual conference held under the auspices of IBS is organized in different Indian cities.
