Vigyan Pratibha is a novel initiative of Government of India for extended nurture of talent in Science and Mathematics among schools students of Class 8th to 10th in the country. The program was formally launched on July 31, 2017 by Dr. Sekhar Basu, Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission. Homi Bhabha Center for Science Education (a center of Tata Institute of Fundamental Research in Mumbai) has been assigned the academic leadership of the program. The program will be implemented in Kendriya Vidyalayas (KVs), Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas (JNVs), and Atomic Energy Central Schools (AECSs) in the country. The core of the project would be in the form of Learning Units that will be implemented by school teachers in these schools as a part of science circles for interested students. These units will be closely related to the school curricula, but would expose students to dimensions of science and mathematics beyond the textbooks.

HBCSE and several collaborating institutions such as Saha Institute of Nuclear Physics, Kolkata would be providing constant academic support to the teachers in KVs, JNVs, and AECSs in implementation of the program. However, the Learning Units would be accessible to public on this website. Any school or teacher is welcome to implement these units in their school.

The Learning Units shared here have been designed with pedagogies informed by science, technology, and mathematics education research. As is necessitated by the process of education, the units are not fixed, but will evolve with time with feedback from students and teachers, and the varying needs of different student populations in the country. We welcome and seek feedback from teacher and students about their experiences when they use these Learning Units.

Many of the Learning Units involve active study and data collection by students about their surroundings. Collecting, sharing, and comparing of findings/data among different students in a school and across different parts of the country is another important facet planned in this program. This aspect would provide a novel kind of learning environment — an environment that has the potential of transforming not just the scenario of science education but the practice of science itself in the country.
