Two or Three Things I Know About Water Surface

The water surface is in reality a complex interface with various short and long range interactions which ultimately come from the unique properties of bulk water and the water molecule. This interface gives rise to and sustains two-dimensional lattices of molecules that have parts acting differently to the water surface. These lattices are metastable and their long term dynamics as they turn to three-dimensional multilayer membranes can take different pathways. They can also drive the formation of both two-dimensional lattices of specific metal ions and aperiodic patterns of metal nanoclusters, under suitable conditions. In this talk some of these aspects will be discussed.
